Mary Ellen is the owner of Bates Information Services, providing strategic business research to business professionals and special librarians, and training and consulting services to the information industry. She is a prolific writer and speaker, having keynoted at conferences around the world and written six books and innumerable articles on the information industry. She is a regular columnist for
ONLINE magazine. She received her MLS from the University of California, Berkeley, and worked in special libraries for over a decade before starting her own company in 1991. She publishes two free monthly e-newsletters (see
www.BatesInfo.com) and she blogs at
Librarian Of Fortune. She serves on the board of directors of SLA.

As Curriculum Services Specialist, Ann works directly with faculty in Harvard Business School's MBA program to incorporate an understanding and use of business research resources into the course curriculum. This position builds on Ann's previous experience and knowledge of HBS in her role for four years as Baker's Financial Librarian. Ann has worked in both the private and public sector as an educator, researcher and information professional. Previous positions were with Columbia University, Credit Suisse First Boston, Chase Manhattan Bank, the American Management Association, Warburg Pincus and Goldman Sachs. In addition to her full-time job, she teaches a course in Business Research at Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science. She is an active member of SLA and its Business & Finance Division. She received the B&F Division Award for Outstanding Achievement in Business Librarianship in June 2007. Peggy Garvin founded and runs her own firm, Garvin Information Consulting. She writes, trains, and consults on the topic of U.S. government information resources and policy.
Peggy is the editor of a forthcoming book from Ashgate Publishing: Government Information Management in the 21st Century: International Perspectives. She also writes the Government Online column for Searcher magazine and contributes to Online magazine.
Peggy got her MLS from the Syracuse University School of Information Studies and spent the largest part of her non-independent career working for the Library of Congress Congressional Research Service. She has trained Members of Congress, public policy specialists, lobbyists, librarians, and others on finding the information they need to do their jobs.
Peggy received the 2011 SLA Dow Jones Leadership Award, which honors an SLA member who has led others by exemplifying professional and personal competencies.

Laura Gordon-Murnane is currently employed at BNA as their intranet web master. She has been with BNA for over ten years. Laura earned her MLS degree from the University of Maryland. Library Journal named her as one of their Movers and Shakers for 2005 and she has published many articles for Searcher and Online.

Ran is the author of The Extreme Searcher's Internet Handbook, The Traveler's Web, The Extreme Searcher's Guide to Web Search Engines, and Yahoo! to the Max. He is also a frequent contributor and columnist for professional publications. Through his company, Online Strategies, Ran creates and presents courses on using the Web for professional associations, governments, NGO's, companies, schools, and businesses in the U.S. and abroad. Ran has held management and training positions with DIALOG and Knight-Ridder Information Services, and has been a reference librarian at MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently an adjunct faculty member for Catholic University's School of Library and Information Science, Lesley University's Technology in Education Program, and Johns Hopkins University. He is active in the American Society for Information Science and Technology and the Association of Independent Information Professionals.

Alison Ince manages the Research Collections at the National Geographic Library. She supports the editorial and business needs of National Geographic staff by maintaining up-to-date research materials, including print books, e-books, periodicals, maps, and databases. She provides reference assistance on a variety of topics relevant to National Geographic product and mission areas, especially those relating to science, natural history, and the environment. She regularly teaches classes to staff on efficient Web search techniques. She earned her M.S. in Library Science and M.A. in English Literature at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and her undergraduate degree in English Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in the National Geographic Library since 2002.

Rick Mastroianni manages the library for the Newseum and its parent organization, the Freedom Forum. He has worked in all areas of exhibit development research, news research, fact-checking and library operations since joining the organization in 1996. Prior to working at the Newseum, he started a business research information center at Earle Palmer Brown Advertising in Bethesda, Maryland. He helped start business units within the agency to provide database and interactive marketing services to EPB clients. He also established an information center for First Consulting Group, a healthcare management consulting firm based in Long Beach, California.
He earned a MSLS degree from Catholic University and an undergraduate degree in English Literature from California State University, Long Beach.

A long-time observer of the information industry, she speaks frequently at conferences, such as WebSearch University, Internet Librarian, Online Information (London, UK), Internet Librarian International, and national library meetings outside the U.S. She has adjunct faculty status at the School of Library and Information Science at IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis). Her professional career began at BankAmerica Corporation, San Francisco, directing a worldwide program of research and information services. She established her independent information research business in 1987. Her undergraduate degree is from Brown University and her MLS was earned at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See, published by Information Today, Inc. Price lives in suburban Washington D.C. and earned a Masters of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Chris Sherman is executive editor of Search Engine Land and president of Searchwise LLC, a Boulder CO-based web consulting firm. He is the author of Google Power: Unleash the Full Power of Google, published by McGraw-Hill. He co-authored (with Gary Price) The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See, published by Information Today, Inc. From 2001 through 2006, Chris was executive editor of SearchEngineWatch. Chris holds a master's degree in interactive educational technology from Stanford University and a B.A. in visual arts and communications from the University of California, San Diego.

David Shumaker has served as Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science, Catholic University of America, since August 2006.
Dave's teaching interests include the present and future roles of librarians in society, the management of libraries and information services, marketing, information systems, and library public services. His research and writing explore the changing roles of librarians in organizations of all types. He and his co-investigator, Mary Talley, were awarded the 2007 Special Libraries Association Research Grant for their project, "Models of Embedded Librarianship." The final report of the project is available on the SLA website, and related articles have been published in Library Journal, Reference & User Services Quarterly, and Information Outlook. Dave is a frequent speaker and panelist on embedded librarianship.
Previously, Dave was Manager of Information Services at the MITRE Corporation. In this position he was responsible for MITRE's corporate library, records management, and archives operations. Earlier in his career, he was a Library of Congress Intern, a cataloger, and an automation specialist for the U.S. National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. He holds graduate degrees from Drexel University and the University of Maryland.

Maggie Turqman has worked as a librarian at National Geographic since 2002, focusing on research, training, marketing, and emerging technology. The library serves the staff at National Geographic, where there is a strong demand for information on science and environmental topics. This includes content for magazines, books, television, and in support of the society’s research and educational mission programs. Maggie is currently the manager of research and training, and regularly teaches classes to National Geographic staff on how to do effective research, and has previously taught workshops at SLA on topics such as trends research, training, and podcasting. Maggie has an MLS from Unversity of Maryland and a BA from William and Mary.
